Voyage of the Doomed
The voyage of the German liner St. Louis carrying German refugees fleeing Nazi Germany in May 1939 is a well-known chapter of Holocaust history.
Ruth’s grandmother Erna Levy and other relatives were passengers on the ship. Her great uncle Arthur Weil wrote one of only two surviving diaries about their dramatic journey. To raise public awareness of this among younger generations, Ruth collaborated with Dr Rafael Medoff, founding Director of the David Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, to develop a graphic version of Arthur’s diary.
Dark Horse Comics, the largest independent U.S. comic publisher, innovated by including Arthur Weil’s diary in its anthology Whistleblowers: Four Who Fought to Expose the Holocaust to America, riveting stories dramatized in graphic form. The book is available from Bookshop.org, Amazon and other booksellers.
